Anthony Rollins, convicted serial rapist, was sentenced at the end of yesterday by Judge Philip Volland to 87 years in prison.
Calling Rollins “a rapist in blue with a badge,” Judge Volland continued by saying, “I was shocked. I remain shocked. When someone in a position like his preys on women, it erodes our faith in the entire legal system.”
But today, after several delays, Rollins was sentenced, he was convicted last year for sexually assaulting five women. He was also found guilty of illegal use of a computer and official misconduct.
The lengthy sentencing hearing was attended by victims and victim’s families. Statements from the victyims were read in court.
Police Chief Mark Mew also spoke at the hearing, speaking of the damage that Rollins did to the Anchorage Police Department and resulting lack of trust that the public has developed for the department. He said, “No one can tolerate a liar. And that is the worst part of this mess, for us, as we strive every day to do a great job for our community, our neighbors and each other. Anthony Rollins, you may be going away. But the rest of us are stuck in the wreckage you have left in your wake.”
“We have to, as a society, be able to trust the police,” one victim wrote. “We shouldn’t have to be protected from them.”
“I have such a huge uneasiness that I fear for my life even though this person is in jail,” wrote another.
Asking for a minimum sentence from the judge, Rollins also read a statement aloud to the court. He pointed out in his statement how he had received an award for sexual assault prevention from the wommen’s organization, Standing Together Against Rape or STAR. He said at one point, “My care and compassion for victims of sexual assault has not changed as a result of the trial.”
Rollin’s statement did not sway Judge Volland in the slightest, who said later, that he shook his head in disbelief when he heard that statement.
Even if Rollins gets parole, it will not come until his mid-90s. He will most likely spend the remainder of his life with the people that he helped put there.
