An 8-year-old boy from East Rochester died in a trailer fire in Penfield, in up-state New York, early Monday morning trying to rescue his disabled grandfather after successfully waking up six family members.
The young boy, identified as 8-year-old Tyler J. Doohan, awoke to fire and smoke during the early morning hours of Monday and woke up six of the family members in the trailer.
Those six, along with the boy got out of the trailer, but moments, later, the young boy pulled himself from his Aunt’s grasp and went back into the burning trailer and attempted to rescue his grandfather, Louis J. Beach, who had lost a leg and was disabled, from a back bedroom in the structure. Unfortunately, the young boy was unsuccessful in his attempt to rescue his grandfather, both were found near each other in the back bedroom of the charred trailer, dead from apparent heat and smoke inhalation. It appeared as if Tyler was attempting to lift his grandfather from the bed when he succumbed to the smoke.
A third victim of the fire, Steven D. Smith, was found dead in the front room of the destroyed trailer.
Firefighters responded to a 911 call and got to the fire, but by then the trailer was ablaze through and through. The six survivors, that included the grandmother, an aunt and the aunt’s small children, were all taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment of varying degrees of smoke inhalation, one of the victims also suffered slight burns.
Fire officials are investigating the fire but believe that the fire was accidental and was started by faulty electrical wiring. They do not believe that the trailer had a working fire or smoke alarm.
The Superintendent of East Rochester School District, Richard Stutzman Jr released a statement concerning Tyler and his selfless deed, saying, “In bravely and selflessly giving his own life, he was able to save the lives of six others — and he truly is a hero.”
An online fundraising effort is underway on YouCaring.com for Tyler and has raised $5,100 as of Wednesday morning.
