Investigators are looking into a fire that engulfed a stretch limousine as it was crossing the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge in Foster City, California on Saturday that killed a bride and four others.
After first misunderstanding the passengers cries of “smoke,” where the driver believed the bride and her entourage were asking if they could smoke, he finally got the message the second time over the blaring music as the passengers screamed for him to pull over.

The driver of the limo was able to pull four of the passengers through the partition between him and the back of the vehicle, but for the others, it was too late. One of the surviving women was able to make it to the passenger door to the back of the limo and open it but, within 90 seconds, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The remaining passengers had already succumbed to the flames and smoke.
After dousing the inferno, Firefighters found the five women, all nurses, huddled near the partition, unable to fit through. They will make positive identifications of the fire victims through their dental records.
The newlywed nurse, 31-year-old Neriza Fojas, and her group were crossing the bridge, on their way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel when the bizarre incident occurred.
A passing motorist took video of the incident and it was aired on KTVU-TV. The short video shows the back end of the limo already engulfed in flames.
It was confirmed by the California Public Utilities Commission that the Limo Service was in full compliance and was licensed and insured. Investigators are looking for signs of accelerants in their investigation and have not yet deternmined the cause of the fire.
Two of the surviving women are in local hospitals in critical condition. The condition of the others is still unknown.
