Two Polls, taken Wednesday and Thursday show Gingrich ahead by a Nose in what looks like a very tight race to come in Alabama and Mississippi.
An automated Rasmussen Poll, done yesterday, on 750 likely Republican voters showed Gingrich slightly ahead with 30% of the GOP nod. Santorum was a point behind Gingrich and a point ahead of Romney at 29%. The Rasmussen Poll has a margin of error of four percentage points, so in actuality it could be anybody’s game.
The spread is slightly wider in Mississippi, there the former House Speaker snagged 35% of the poll. Gingrich was followed by the former governor of Massachusetts at 31%, who in turn, led Santorum by 11% of the poll take. Santorum had 20%. This Mississippi poll was live and targetted 600 likely GOP voters. It had a margin of error of +/-4% as well
The former Speaker has stressed religion at his speaking engagements in the south, it has helped his numbers some. Gingrich has ramped up attacks on Santorum as well, even as Santorum supporters attempt to talk him into ceding the race. The pressure is on since Super Tuesday’s results only gave Gingrich his home state of Georgia.
The push to drive Gingrich out of the race will be difficult. Gingrich, according to the Republican National Committee’s count, has bound more delegates than Santorum even though Santorum has won seven primaries to date compared to Gingrich’s two. The Committee has Gingrich at 107 delegates, 12 ahead of Santorum, who has 95.
According to the committee, Romney commands the lead with 339. In order to grab the nomination, one of the three has to gather together 1,144 delegates.
