ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell announced yesterday that his Fiscal Year 2013 budget includes $10 million for safety improvements along the Knik-Goose Bay Road Corridor, and $20 million to support a portion of the 50 percent match for transportation bonds approved by Mat-Su voters in October 2011.

“The Mat-Su Borough is the fastest-growing area of the state,” Governor Parnell said. “These road improvements will increase safety, relieve congestion, and provide more capacity for vehicles and pedestrians.”

Knik-Goose Bay (KGB) Road is one of four designated highway safety corridors in the state. Improvements to KGB Road will reduce the incidence of fatal and major injury accidents. Voters approved $32 million in transportation bonds for 11 roads and four pathways in the October election. The state funds will match a significant portion of the approved projects designed to upgrade substandard roads, provide access to schools, accommodate increased traffic volumes, widen lanes, and provide shoulders and walking paths.

“Mat-Su residents have stepped up to the plate and are willing to contribute their hard-earned dollars to improve the safety and efficiency of their roads,” Governor Parnell added. “Better roads prevent accidents and save lives. We are happy to partner with the Mat-Su to make that happen.”
