Last Monday, Alaska State troopers began an investigation into a habitual drunk driver after receiving a complaint from a caller in Ninilchik. During the investigation, troopers were able to ascertain that the vehicle’s owner had a revoked drivers license.

Throughout the week, troopers would observe the reported green 2000 Subaru station wagon multiple times, parked and unoccupied.

Then, on Saturday at approximately 6:35 PM, spotted the suspect vehicle traveling northbound on the Sterling Highway. Prior to the traffic stop troopers saw that the driver was 78-year-old Ninilchik resident Cal Matthews. It was known to troopers that Matthews was the registered owner of the vehicle, it was also known that the driver had a revoked license.

Troopers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle off of the sterling Highway at Fleetwood Avenue. During the stop, it was determined that Matthews was driving under the influence, Matthews was subsequently arrested for DUI.

Further investigation, and a check of Matthew’s criminal history, would determine that Matthews had a prior felony DUI conviction in 2007. Because of that prior felony DUI conviction, the current DUI arrest was also considered a felony. A check on Matthews license would find that it had been revoked because of DUI charges until the year 2035.

Matthews was arrested on DUI and driving while license revoked charges and transported to the Homer Jail, where he was remanded without bail.

The Subaru was impounded pending forfeiture hearings.
