The man who called to report the stranding was the man himself. 60-year-old Frank Carruthers reported to troopers that he had been out checking his crab pots out on the ice using his snow machine, when high winds opened up a fifty foot gap, breaking the ice and isolating Carruthers from the shore.
After receiving the call, the Alaska State Troopers visually located Carruthers about a mile from shore out on the ice. Continuing contact with Carruthers through his cell phone, the troopers made arraignments with Bering Air to pick up Carruthers via R-44 helicopter.
The helicopter picked up Carruthers without incident and transported him back to Nome where Emergency Medical Services checked him over. Carruthers did not require medical services.
