Jennifer Mee, better known as "The Hiccup Girl," who gained notoriety on television in 2007 for her continuous hiccuping,is in court, and is charged for murder in the death of a 22-year-old former Walmart employee.
Jury selection in the murder trial taking place in Florida began on Tuesday.
Prosecutors alleged that Jennifer Mee Lured the 22-year-old former Walmart employee, Shannon Griffin, to a home in St. Petersburg, Florida to conduct a marijuana buy. When the two arrived at the home two of Mee’s accomplices robbed and killed Griffin.
One of Mee’s accomplices LaRon Ralford, has already been convicted in the case in August and has been sentenced to life in prison. The other accomplice, Lamont Newton, who was also Mee’s boyfriend, has yet to go to trial.
prosecutors believe that Mee was actively involved in the robbery, and have gone as far as to say that she planned the robbery where the 22-year-old man was killed. Under Florida law, she can be convicted of murder if she was involved in a serious felony crime that resulted in Griffin’s death.
Mee’s lawyer, John Trevena, has argued that his client was not involved in the robbery, and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and still is being medically treated for her ongoing problem with hiccups.
Judge Nancy Moate Ley has told the potential jurors in the case that the trial will unlikely last longer than the end of the week.
If convicted, Mee faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
