JUNEAU – Today, House Democratic legislators gathered around Sam Kito III to announce his confirmation as the new representative for House District 32. The caucus met Monday night along with democratic members of the House Majority to unanimously confirm Kito.

“We are excited to announce Sam Kito III as the newest member of our caucus,” said House Democratic Leader Chris Tuck (D-Anchorage). “Sam’s integrity and strong character, extensive experience, and close connection to his constituents will help him make an immediate and positive impact for Alaska and the Southeast communities he represents.”

Kito is a lifelong Alaskan with over 24 years of experience in engineering, economic development, and government relations. He has significant experience in the fishing and transportation sectors—two areas of great importance to Juneau and the other Southeast Alaska communities in House District 32.

“I am looking forward to joining the House Democratic Caucus and working on issues important to my constituents and the state,” said Kito.

Governor Sean Parnell appointed Kito to the position on Friday, February 21, subject to confirmation by democratic lawmakers in the Alaska state House of Representatives. Kito was one of three names the local democratic party organization, the Tongass Democrats, forwarded to the governor to consider for the appointment. The seat became vacant when Representative Beth Kerttula resigned her seat earlier this year to take a position at Stanford University.

House District 32 includes downtown Juneau, Petersburg, Skagway, Gustavus, Tenakee Springs, Kupreanof, Excursion Inlet and Hobart Bay.

Kito will be sworn in tomorrow, Wednesday, February 26 during the House Floor Session. He is expected to serve on the House Community and Regional Affairs Committee pending approval by the House Committee on Committees.
