(Juneau) – On the day that thousands of Alaskans marched in solidarity against domestic violence and sexual assault in communities across the state as a part of Governor's Choose Respect campaign, the Alaska House passed a resolution yesterday declaring April 2012 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the State of Alaska. The passage of House Concurrent Resolution 28 sponsored by Representative Cathy Muñoz, provides a set time for reflection and dialogue, which will hopefully encourage Alaskans to speak out against these crimes.
Alaska has long been plagued with the highest rates of sexual assault in the country, estimated at 2.5 times the national average. The University of Alaska Anchorage Justice Center found that out of every 100 Alaska women, 37 have experienced sexual violence, and 59 out of every 100 have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence, or both. “These statistics are simply unacceptable, and until this epidemic is stopped, it will continue to devastate families, individuals, and communities in every corner of our great state,” Muñoz, R-Juneau, said.
The resolution’s intent is to make a statement that all Alaskans deserve a life free of violence, and to heighten the awareness of this most pervasive human rights violation. HCR 28 both recognizes and commends the many volunteers, agencies, social workers, and law enforcement officers who dedicate their careers to providing victims of sexual assault with safety, options and justice.
“This resolution sends an important message to Alaskans that sexual violence is not to be tolerated, silenced or covered up,” Muñoz said. “As an Alaskan, a legislator and a mother, it is my hope that Alaskans will speak out against sexual assault and make it known across this state that these acts will never be overlooked in our homes or communities.”
The House unanimously approved HCR 28. The resolution is supported by numerous regional and statewide nonprofit organizations that serve Alaskans affected by sexual assault. It now moves to the Alaska Senate for consideration.
