Over 100 vehicles were involved in a massive chain-reaction pileup on an icy Pennsylvania turnpike on Friday morning.
Dozens of the vehicles in the huge accident that closed the turnpike were wrecked and approximately two dozen people were injured in successive collisions north of Philadelphia.
The initial wreck involved about a 10 vehicles and five tractor-trailers at 8:25 am. Within moments a series of other crashes occurred. The crashes came after a large snowstorm that deposited approximately a foot of snow in the area. Speed restrictions were lifted less than three hours earlier, but the roadways remained slippery.
The accident has turned the tuirnpike into a massive parking lot as commuters wait for the turnpike to be cleared of wreckage and re-opened. The turnpike was closed in both directions for for response vehicles and tow trucks dealing with the accidents that occurred in the eastbound lane. The closure has traffic backed up for miles.
Flight restrictions have been put in place over the area because of the large amount of news helicopters that have flown to the area to tape the huge accident.
