Anchorage police released information today on last night's robberies that ended in gunfire.
The first robbery occurred at the Brown Jug located on Spenard Road at just before 11 pm. The Anchorage Police Department received a 911 call moments after the robbery occurred. Police were informed that the robber left on foot.
A little over 4 hours later, at about 3:15 am, another 911 call came into the Police station. It was another robbery call-in. This robbery occurred at the Holiday Station on the 8800 block of Jewel Lake Road. Again, the clerk there said that the robber left on foot, this time northbound.
Police quickly set up a perimeter and a canine unit was sent out to track the suspect. That tracking effort ended at 3:45am when the perpetrator couldn’t be located.
The police also received information from the clerk that the the clerk had been told of a suspicious vehicle had been seen in the area earlier. The occupants of the vehicle appeared to be “casing” the area.
Information on the vehicle was sent out to patrol officers, and at around 4:30 am, an officer reported what he believed to be the vehicle in question. He attempted to stop the vehicle, it was then that the suspects attempted to evade the officers, several vehicles were rammed in the process.
Then gunfire rang out. Anchorage police fired, wounding one of the suspects. The other subject was also injured, but there is no information on the nature of the injuries. Both suspects were taken to a local hospital for their injuries. One of the subjects was treated and released, the other, the gunshot victim, remains hospitalized. Neither susppect was arrested or charged.
The police closed the area around 30th and Spenard Road and processed the scene. The area was closed for several hours.
Because no arrests were made, no names have been released. The names of the officers has been kept back as well. Their names will be withheld for 3 days as per APD policy.
The Anchorage Police Department said that no further details will be released pending the investigation by the APD Homicide Unit and State Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals.
