Fairbanks police continue to search for the man arrested on warrant charges on Tuesday night but escaped before he could be remanded to jail. Although leads have been phoned in on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, responding police still did not locate 28-year-old Julius “JT” Chambers.
According to Fairbanks police Lt. Dan Welborn, Chambers was arrested on Tuesday night on 29th Avenue in South Fairbanks on a no bail warrant issued on May 21st for probation violations on an original conviction of Assault IV/Resisting Arrest from 2013. Police went to Chambers’ location in response to a disturbance call at a residence there.
Despite being handcuffed, Chambers was able to gain access to the front portion of the Fairbanks Police Department’s Ford Explorer and abscond with the vehicle. Chambers drove the vehicle a short distance on Mercer Street between 28th and 29th avenues before driving into the ditch.
After putting the vehicle in the ditch, Chambers fled on foot. Fairbanks police put a perimeter in place and employed a canine in the search for Chambers, but came up empty handed.
After failing to re-apprehend Chambers, Fairbanks police sent out a Nixie Email, which is a Community Information Service, describing Chambers, notifying of his escape and requesting information of his whereabouts. Chambers was described as caucasian, 5’5″ tall, wearing a black “Keep Calm and Chive On” hoodie and possibly still handcuffed.28th Ave and Turner was also given as his last whereabouts.
Chambers has a violent criminal past, he has been convicted of four assaults since 2008 and also has multiple alcohol convictions including a DUI.
Lt Welborn, this morning, stated that Chambers is now charged with additional charges of Vehicle Theft and Escape. According to the Fairbanks Police Department, they are looking into other cases in which Chambers may have been involved.
