The Cordova Police Department received a 911 cal from the fishing vessel Esperanza reporting a man overboard.
The vessel reported that the man, 40-year-old Kake resident Cornell Perry Bean Jr, had been in the water for about ten minutes before they successfully found and retrieved him from the water. When reporting, they relayed that they were performing CPR on the man.

Through heavy fog, the Patrol Vessel Churchill and a United States Coast Guard Helicopter responded to the vessel’s coordinates. When the Coast Guard helo arrived on scene they determined that a medevac by air was no longer necessary as CPR had been ongoing for well over an hour without results.
Bean was transferred to the Patrol vessel Churchill. Contact was made with the Cordova Community Medical Center and the on-call doctor pronounced Bean deceased.
Bean was not wearing a personal floatation device when he went overboard.
Bean’s next of kin have been notified.
His remains will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage for autopsy.
