Raising Awareness of Opioid Addiction | Tonight, 7pm at KHS Choral Pod
As part of our effort to help address opioid addiction in our community, KANA has partnered with Healthy Tomorrows Kodiak and Providence to cohost a community film viewing and forum on heroin and opioid use in our community.
“Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict,” a 45 minute documentary film regarding heroin/opioid addiction, will be shown and followed by an interactive panel discussion with local medical and substance abuse professionals, local law enforcement, and federal law enforcement, and Kodiak youth about the issues the film raises and how heroin is impacting Kodiak in particular.
The FBI and DEA created the documentary, whose title refers to the never-ending pursuit of the original or ultimate high, features stark first-person accounts told by individuals who have abused opioids or whose children have abused opioids, with tragic consequences. “This film may be difficult to watch,” explains FBI Director James Comey, “but we hope it educates our students and young adults about the tragic consequences that come with abusing these drugs and that it will cause people to think twice before becoming its next victim.”
According to Acting DEA Administrator Chuck Rosenberg, “The numbers are appalling—tens of thousands of Americans will die this year from drug-related deaths, and more than half of these deaths are from heroin and prescription opioid overdoses. I hope this [documentary] will be a wakeup call for folks.”
Join the discussion at 7pm tonight in the Kodiak High School Auditorium Choral Pod.
