With four years to go before the target date of 2020, new data from the Healthy Alaskans 2020 initiative shows progress is being made on meeting the ten-year goals for improving the health of all Alaskans.
Of the 25 leading health priorities tracked, Alaska has met, or is on target to meet, 14 of the scorecard goals. The leading health priorities include: reducing the rates of cancer, suicide, and interpersonal violence and sexual assault; decreasing alcohol, tobacco, and drug use; increasing disease prevention through vaccines, improved access to in-home water and wastewater services; and lowering Alaska’s obesity rate, among others. Led jointly by the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services and ANTHC, Healthy Alaskans 2020 is a framework of 25 health priorities for Alaska. Each priority has its own target for improvement to reach by 2020. This framework is based on the latest scientific evidence and the input of Alaskans from communities across the state.

Strengthening Families Training Offered for the Kodiak Community on October 19th & 20th | Enhancing Support for Parents
KANA has partnered with Early Childhood Comprehensive System of Alaska to improve developmental outcomes by 25% in children birth to five over the next 5 years. On October 19th – 20th, KANA, the ECCS Project, and the Child Welfare Academy will be offering a Strengthening Families Training in Kodiak.
Strengthening Families™ is a two-day, interactive training on how programs and communities can help parents find support during tough times, discover helpful parenting knowledge, and connect with people they can count on. The event will feature discussion on how this approach could be adapted for our community, building on local values and traditions.
This research-informed, strength-based approach focused on engaging families, programs and communities in building five protective factors that help families succeed and thrive, even in the face of risk and challenges with an overarching goal of promoting child and family well-being. The Strengthening Families Protective Factors Approach can be used to enhance the work that you are already doing and assist you in becoming more “intentional” in promoting the factors that keep families strong and preventing child maltreatment.
