A large 7.0 earthquake struck the Aleutian Islands at 8:25 am on Friday morning. The shaker caused residents of Atka and Adak to scramble as the quake grew larger and larger before subsiding.
The minute-long quake was centered approximately 67 miles to the southwest of Atka where it was felt the strongest. Aftershocks shook the area throughout the day with close to 80 smaller quakes occurring as the day progressed with various intensities, the largest being 4.8.
There was no damage or injuries reported as a result of the earthquake that occurred beneath the subduction zone to the south that plunges beneath the Aleutian chain.
No tsunami was generated by the quake that occurred at a depth of 11 miles beneath the seafloor.
