Key Campaign helps spread awareness for Alaskans with Developmental Disabilities
JUNEAU-This week, Legislators are recognizing the achievements of the Key Coalition of Alaska, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Since February 22, 1988, representatives from around the state have come to Juneau each year for the Key Campaign to ensure that services continue to improve for Alaskan citizens who experience disabilities.
“The Key Coalition is growing stronger every year in the fight for a better life for Alaskans who cannot fight for themselves,” said Senator Bettye Davis, D-Anchorage. “Anyone who is concerned about the rights, dignity and dreams of individuals who experience disabilities is encouraged to join in the efforts of the Key Coalition.”
This year, Key Campaign representatives have four goals they plan to present to lawmakers. First, they want to establish a consultation group that provides support and intervention services to people who are at risk of being institutionalized or sent to facilities out of state. Next, they are urging the State of Alaska to continue working to reduce the waiting list of more than 850 people who need help. Third, they are requesting that the State provide additional services needed to support children under the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA). Finally, the group plans to push for the state to require insurance coverage for autism services, which is currently being considered in the Legislature under Senate Bill 74.
“We heard heartbreaking stories this weekend from mothers of autistic children in Anchorage,” said Senator Davis. “Their testimony only scratches the surface of the problems that Alaskans with disabilities face. The Key Coalition provides a vital voice in how the state can best help remove these roadblocks and pave a road to successful and fulfilling life for these individuals.”
The rally will kick-off with a dinner at Centennial Hall on Wednesday, February 22nd. Next, the Key Campaign will make a presentation to a joint meeting of the House and Senate Health & Social Services Committee at 8 a.m. on Thursday, February 23th in Senate Finance Committee Room 532. Finally, at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, Key Campaign members plan to march from the Goldbelt Hotel to the steps of the Capitol.
