The man who escaped from the Ionia correctional facility in Michigan late Sunday was captured in LaPorte County Indiana on Monday evening, bringing that manhunt to an end.
40-year-old Michael David Elliott was serving a life sentence for a quadruple murder at the Ionia correctional facility. He had been locked up there since 1994. It took the authorities at that facility three hours to even realize that he was missing. it is believed that he made good his escape by pushing apart to prison fences that were electrified and armed with motion sensors using just his hands. When he escaped he was wearing a civilian white kitchen uniform.
Soon after his escape, he abducted a woman, taking her and her vehicle, a red Jeep, and fled the state.
Authorities were alerted to his whereabouts when the woman he had abducted got away from the escapee on Sunday night and locked herself into a gas station bathroom 100 miles away in Middlebury, Indiana. It was from that bathroom that she called 911 on a cell phone she had concealed on her person. When authorities responded to the scene, they found that Elliott had already fled.
As the manhunt continued, on Monday a homeowner in LaGrange County, Indiana found the woman’s Jeep liberty abandoned in a residential area 20 miles east of Elkhart. Then the chase began in earnest after authorities in LaPorte County were alerted of a vehicle stolen at a factory there. Within seconds the vehicle was spotted and authorities began the chase to apprehend Elliott. the stolen vehicle was chased through the city of La Porte and into the rural area of Kankakee Township. Law enforcement there used stop sticks to disable the vehicle.
Elliott was taken into custody and locked up at the LaPorte County jail.
Prison officials are unsure how Elliott managed to get through the electrified fence without shocking himself or how he managed to not set off the motion sensors.
Elliott shot four people and burned down their house in Gladwin County in 1993 at the age of 20. One of his codefendants at the trial said that Elliott laughed about shooting the victims and their heads.
