ANCHORAGE: A new radio ad narrated by Alaska Native elder Willie Hensley is holding Dan Sullivan accountable for his anti-subsistence lawsuit against Katie John. As Attorney General, Sullivan litigated to take away Alaska Natives’ subsistence rights, a decision that has drawn widespread derision in rural Alaska. Though Sullivan has tried to cover up that lawsuit on the campaign trail, Alaskans have called out Sullivan for lying about his record on subsistence.
“Hunting and fishing is not just about food. For us, it’s a way of life. That’s why I’m not voting for Dan Sullivan. As Attorney General, Sullivan sued Katie John,” says Willie Hensley in the new ad.
The United Tribes of Bristol Bay and Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes already have endorsed Senator Begich, while leading Alaska Native legal advocates have written about the stark contrast between Begich and Sullivan’s positions on subsistence. The radio ad will continue to hold Sullivan accountable for his assault on subsistence rights.
Ad narrator Willie Hensley is a legendary Alaska Native leader who played a seminal role in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and formation of Alaska Native Corporations. Hensley helped found and served as executive director and president of the Alaska Federation of Natives. A native of Kotzebue, Hensley was a founder of the NANA Corporation and played a key role developing the Red Dog Mine. He also served as a Democrat in the state House and state Senate.
The Alaska Democratic Party is paying for the radio ad, which will run throughout rural Alaska.
