Anchorage, Alaska – Members of the Seattle Seahawks will spend a day in the nation’s northernmost city of Barrow, Alaska, on July 6, visiting with Special Olympics athletes and taking a plunge into the Arctic Ocean as part of a trip made possible by General Communication Inc. (GCI).
“Many Alaskans consider themselves the 12th Man of the Seattle Seahawks and this visit allows us to share the Alaska way of life with these professional athletes while also supporting Special Olympics Alaska,” said Paul Landes, GCI’s VP of consumer services. “It’s an opportunity to demonstrate our culture and passion for sports but it’s also a day of fun for the entire community of Barrow.”
Because of GCI’s sponsorship, Seattle Seahawks players Kristjan Sokoli and Terry Poole, assistant head coach Tom Cable and Sea Gals Kylie Cook and De’Djuana Simpson will spend the day in Barrow, the most northern stop on an unofficial Alaska tour. The Barrow visit is a partnership between GCI, Alaska Airlines, the North Slope Borough and Special Olympics Alaska.
In Barrow, the Seahawks will participate in a community cookout at noon at the Kathy Parker Football Field and will join Special Olympics Alaska athletes and Barrow youth for activities. The group will take a dip in the Arctic Ocean, explore the Iñupiat Heritage Center and make a home visit with a Barrow family.
The Seahawks visit is being coordinated by the Mat-Su Sea Hawkers, a booster organization and charity that raises funds for Special Olympics Alaska, United Way and the Alaska Native Medical Center. The Mat-Su Sea Hawkers have a 30-year partnership with the Seattle Seahawks and Special Olympics Alaska.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
