ANCHORAGE-Monday, the offices of our Delegates, Senator Lisa Murkowski, Senator Mark Begich and Representative Don Young received suspicious packages marked priority in the mail.
The discovery of a white powdery substance in two of the envelopes prompted Federal Marshals and the FBI to investigate. The initial response was to evacuate the Federal building in Fairbanks as a result of the discovery in Begich’s office. The Anchorage Federal Building closed its 6th floor upon discovery of a similar package at Don Young’s office.
The FBI investigated the incidences and contacted the sender at his Arizona address. It was discovered there that there was not any malicious intent in the sending of the packages. Rather, the sender was merely sending samples of a concrete mixture he says would work well in Alaska’s colder climate. Testing of the substance found no hazardous materials in the mix.
There were no charges filed against the Arizona man and his name is not being released as no crime was committed, according to Eric Gonzalez, spokesman for the FBI.
