One person died in a structure fire on Saturday on the Steese Highway the Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety reported on Monday.
Alaska State Troopers were notified of a burning building near mile 41 of the Steese Highway at 5:53 am on Saturday morning. It was reported at that time that one person, who remains unidentified by troopers, did not make it out of the building and was presumed deceased.
Because there was no fire department response to the fire, the building with an estimated value of $200,000, was a total loss.
When a Deputy State Fire Marshal responded to the scene later in the day, their investigation discovered human remains among the fire debris. Those remains were collected and sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy and positive identification.
