It was on the morning of May 23rd, that 50-year-old Ouzinkie resident James Broaten was involved in an ATV accident in the village and was seriously injured.
The village officer VPSO Sheppard reported to the Alaska State Trooper Kodiak Post at 9:10 am that morning that the accident occurred when the ATV that Broaten was driving left the roadway and overturned, seriously injuring Broaten.

A United States Coast Guard helicopter was launched from Air Station Kodiak and arrived at the community and transported Broaten into Kodiak. At Kodiak, Broaten was stabilized at Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center before being transported via LifeFlight to Providence Hospital in Anchorage.
Broaten remained in critical condition and the Alaska Dispatch reported on Monday that Broaten succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
Broaten was recently new to Ouzinkie, and according to John Pestrikoff of the community, Broaten worked at various jobs in the community.
The community of Ouzinkie, with its population of approximately 160 inhabitants, resides on Spruce Island in the Kodiak Archipeligo. The community is 11 air-miles from the city of Kodiak.
