December 13, 2011, Anchorage, Alaska – Reaffirming his commitment to keep Alaskan families safe, Governor Sean Parnell today announced his budget proposal will include funding for 15 new Village Public Safety Officers (VPSO), a new State Trooper, and funding to stop the epidemic of domestic violence and sexual assault (DVSA) in Alaska. In 2009, Governor Parnell pledged to bring VPSOs and trooper support to villages that have none, and has made good on that promise every year since.

“Alaskans deserve the respect and safety that timely law enforcement response brings,” said Governor Parnell. “We will not rest so long as the epidemic of domestic violence and sexual assault steals the hopes and dreams of Alaska’s women, children and men.”

The governor’s budget will propose funding for prevention and intervention programs, shelters, VPSOs, probation officers, and housing for victims of domestic violence. Sixty-four communities held “Choose Respect” events this year, and the governor announced the goal for 2012 is for 100 Alaska communities to host “Choose Respect” rallies, sending a strong message of support to victims and survivors.

15 new Village Public Safety Officers and one new State Trooper – $2.7 million

Screening and services for children exposed to violence, and trauma informed care for adult survivors – $800,000

Housing for victims of domestic violence through Alaska Housing Finance Corporation – $1.3 million

Domestic violence shelters and community prevention programs – $725,000

DVSA prevention effort continuation – $3 million

Targeted supervision of domestic violence felons, and institutional sex offender management – $734,900
