Sport fishermen on Horse Island reported finding human remains at the high-tide line on the beach there on Friday.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers responded to the island as a result of the ccall. When they arrived, they determined that the person found there was recently deceased and there were no signs of foul play.

Further investigation would find that the clothing and remains matched the description of a man reported missing and overboard from the M/V Norwegian Sun the day before.

The vessel had reported 26-year-old Sao Paulo man, Jonas Fillipe de Miranda Santiago, who was a crew-member aboard the Norwegian Sun, had gone overboard on Thursday morning. According to closed circuit television aboard the vessel, he had gone over the side at 4:15 am. He had been reported missing later that day at 1:55 pm.

The Coast responded with a helicopter and a patrol vessel, but were unable to locate the man overboard.

Santiago’s remains were located approximately 10 miles from the location he went overboard.

The investigation into Santiago’s death is continuing, and his remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage for positive identification, and to ascertain any further details into his death.

Santiago’s next of kin were notified of his death and investigation.
