Juneau – Representative Scott Kawasaki (D-Fairbanks) will pre-file legislation aimed at protecting Alaskans from the excessive prices of gasoline and heating fuel.

“Alaskans have long seen high gasoline and heating fuel prices even with an oil pipeline in our backyard,” said Rep. Kawasaki. “This bill ensures we pay a fair price for these products and that money stays with Alaskans rather than lining corporate pocketbooks.”

This bill protects Alaskan communities, individuals and businesses that rely on refined petroleum products for heating and transportation by prohibiting refineries from charging excessive or exorbitant prices for heating oil, diesel or automobile and aircraft fuel. The bill establishes an objective threshold where prices are presumed to be excessive or exorbitant and provides for strict monetary penalties to deter potential violators.

“Even with falling oil prices across the globe, Alaskans still pay a premium to heat their homes and drive to work,” said Rep. Kawasaki. “I have always fought to lower energy prices across the state and I will continue to do that through legislation, amendments and votes.”
