WASHINGTON D.C.-Dave Wu, the Democratic Representative from Oregon announced on Tuesday that he would be stepping down from his position as Representative, a position he has held for seven terms, in the wake a scandal involving an eighteen year old daughter of an associate.
Last week, the Oregonian broke the story that the girl had called the Representative earlier in the year to confront him over an instance of forced sex that took place over the Thanksgiving holidays. Wu acknowledged the encounter, but insisted that the sex was consensual, according to the paper.
Although Wu said that he was stepping down, he also said that his resignation would not be immediate. He stated that he would remain at his post until the debate over the debt ceiling issue is resolved. He stated, “I cannot care for my family the way I wish while serving in Congress and fightingthese very serious allegations.”
This is the second sex scandal to hit the congressional Democrats this year. Representative Anthony Weiner from New York was the first, after he set revealing and lewd pictures to women online.
