Three counts of Attempted Murder have been leveled at the pregnant woman, Ebony Wilkerson, who drove her SUV with three children into the surf at Daytona Beach on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old South Carolina woman was arrested for those charges as well as child abuse charges on Friday.
It was on Tuesday that the 27-week pregnant woman drove to the beach, rolled up the windows and told her 3, 9, and 10-year-old children to go to sleep then proceeded to drive into the Atlantic Ocean.
Beachgoers saw the incident unfolding and rushed to the SUV and tried to find out what was happening as the woman’s son made attempts to grab the wheel. Witnesses say that the two older children were all the while screaming for help saying that their mother was trying to kill them. But, during the woman kept repeating herself and telling those querying her that “We are ok, we are ok.”
One bystander pulled the two older children from the back seat of the vehicle, which by that time, was sinking into the surf. other bystanders and lifeguards pulled the youngest child from the vehicle, as well as the woman, who by that time was trying to exit the sinking vehicle through the window.
Bystanders say that once the woman was free of the vehicle and surf, she just walked away with a strange look on her face.
Wilkerson’s sister had called police earlier that day because of her concern for Wilkerson. Police located and stopped her, but let her go after she told them she was on her way to a domestic abuse center.
The children were taken to the Halifax Health Medical Center, where they spent the night.
