Search for Bethel Boy on Etolin Island Ends Successfully Saturday

An active search was begun on Friday night after a 14-year-old teen from Bethel went missing while at a Behavioral Health Camp on Etolin Island. He left the camp without provisions.

The juvenile had gone missing from the camp for short periods of time previously and had left this time after getting upset with counselors. So, camp staff searched for several hours for the teen, who had left at approximately 8:30 am, before calling in his missing status to Alaska State Troopers at just after 5 pm.

Within an hour, a hasty team responded from Wrangell, and with the assistance of a Coast Guard helicopter, began their search of the northern end of Burnett Inlet where the teen was last seen. The search continued throughout the evening and was suspended at 11:30 pm after having no success in locating the boy.

The search was re-initiated at 6 am on Saturday. By 7:30 am, the boy was located hiding in a parked vehicle near Anita Bay. Troopers say that the search in this case was much more difficult as the boy was actively evading searchers as he was being sought.

The teen was evaluated by medics at the scene and it was determined that he was in good condition.

The youth was transferred to another youth home.
