A Florida man contacted Alaska State Troopers and informed them that he was lost, cold and wet in the woods near Turnagain Arm at 9:22pm on Tuesday night.
The caller, identified as 37-year-old Andres Cabado of Florida, told troopers that he had started hiking near Rabbit Creek at approximately 6:40 am that morning. Cabado related to troopers that during his hike, he had lost the trail and then had become disoriented.
During his search to re-access the trail, Cabado found a creek, and began following the creek hoping it would take him out of the woods. But, as he followed the stream, Cabado told troopers via phone, he had fallen into the creek and consequently got soaked. That was when he had contacted the troopers by cell to inform them he did not know where he was.
Troopers and searchers responded to the area where they had determined that Cabado might be located. Searchers labored to look for the missing hiker until 3:30am without success. The search discontinued until daylight, at which time searchers took up the search again and the trooper’s Helo-2 began an aerial search for the missing man.
As assets continued the search for Cabado, Cabaddo called in to the troopers and informed them that he had made it to the highway and had hitch-hiked back to his house and did not need any medical assistance.
The search for Cabado was then called off. Searchers exited the area and did not report any injuries.
