SITKA – The SouthEast Regional Health Consortium’s WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program in partnership with the Breast Cancer Detection Center announced their Spring 2014 mobile mammography schedule.
The mobile mammography van will visit Angoon from May 12-14, Haines from May 17-21, Kake on May 23 & 24, 2014.
All women are at risk for breast cancer – it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death (after lung cancer) among Alaskan women. Early detection of breast cancer through regular screening increases the chances of long-term survival.
“Last year, over 500 women received a mammogram in their home community, though the mobile mammography program, said Litia Garrison, SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program Manager.“Comprehensive health screenings, including regular mammograms, are an important part of being healthy. The SEARHC Women’s Health Care Team recommends a yearly visit with your provider to review all of your health needs. Contact your local clinic now to schedule an appointment prior to the scheduled mobile mammogram van visit.”
The mobile mammography program is made possible through a partnership between the Breast Cancer Detection Center and the SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program to make regular mammography screening services available to women who live in communities where they are not available year round. In addition to the three locations this spring, the mobile mammogram van will be traveling to Hydaburg, Klawock, Craig, Hoonah, Skagway, and Haines in August.
The SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program provides free clinical breast exams, mammograms, Pap tests and cardiovascular screenings for all women ages 40 and older who meet income and insurance guidelines.
