63-year-old Kaufman County District Attorney Mike MCLelland and his wife Cynthia, age 65, were found shot to death in their home on Saturday. The FBI and the Texas Rangers have taken the lead in the double-homicide 20 miles outside of Dallas.
Texas officials believe that the Aryan Brotherhood is responsible for the killing of Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse, who was shot to death on January 31. He was shot gangland style outside of the Kaufman County Courthouse.
The same day that the first shooting occured at the courthouse, the U.S. Justice Department announced that the Kaufman County District Attorney’s office was involved in a racketeering case against the Aryan Brotherhood. The Aryan Brotherhood has a very powerful presence in Kaufman County where they are involved in drugs and prostitution.
McLelland said after the shooting of Hasse, “We’ll still make the walk, and we’ll still show up. And we’ll still send bad guys out of Kaufman County every chance we get. We’re not stopping. We’re not slowing down.”
During the press conference, McLelland said, “I hope that the people who did this are watching, because we’re very confidant that we’re going to find you. We’re going to pull you out of whatever hole you’re in. We’re going to bring you back and let the people of Kaufman County prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.”
Two months later, McLelland himself would be dead.
The Kaufman County District Attorney’s office will remain closed on Monday, but the courthouse will open, but be heavily guarded in the wake of these newest shootings.
The McLellands have five children, one of which is an officer with the Dallas Police Department.
