Admitted embezzler, 62-year-old Maggie Ahmaogak stepped from the stand yesterday ending her testimony during the fourth day of her sentencing hearing on Thursday.
Ahmaogak, who is the former Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission director spent the day on the stand testifying as to the exact amount that she embezzled from the commission during her time there. The Federal Government claims that the amount that she misspent from the commission’s coffers was in the area of $420,000, Ahmaogak and her attorney counter that it is nearer $90,000.
Ahmaogak, who took the stand on Wednesday and continued through Thursday, admitted to only using $10,000 of the commission’s funds during a commission conference in Saint Kitts in the Caribbean. The rest of the disputed funds she said went into envelopes and was given to commission board members for food and hotel expenses.
U.S. Attorney Steward was want to know why none of the board members who allegedly received the cash never mentioned it to the FBI when they were interviewed. The government claims that the total is much higher. $30,000 is the amount that they say was misused during that Caribbean trip. When asked if she could document the money was given to the board members, Ahmaogak replied that she couldn’t.

It will be the amount of money determined to have been embezzled that will influence the sentence that U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason hands down in the case. This decision will be postponed until November 28th. The sentencing hearing has been delayed because of scheduling conflicts and will not be picked back up until that date.
Ahmaogak pled guilty to two counts of Misapplication of Funds and a count of money laundering on May 7th of this year in an agreement with the Federal government that the count of Wire Fraud be dropped.
Maggie Ahmaogak’s indictment came one week before the North Slope elections in October 2011. George Ahmaogak was running for Borough Mayor. George survived that election, but lost in a runoff race in November to Charlotte Brower.
