The Alaska State Troopers have identified the two men shot at a hunting cabin 40 miles upriver from the Western Alaska community of Kiana.
The two men, brothers, 46-year-old Paul James Buckel, resident of Kotzebue and 47-year-old Fostoria, Michigan resident Charles Buckel were also able to identify their shooter. They positively identified 45-year-old Kiana resident Teddy Smith. Smith was already wanted on firearms charges for an incident that took place in Kiana after the suspicious death of his mother, Dolly Smith, who died on September 7th.
The two Buckel brothers suffered gunshot wounds, one with a wound to the chest and one wounded in the arm. They were shot after stopping at a cabin upriver from Kiana on the Squirrel River, when they stopped, they found the cabin already occupied by Smith. Both men were hospitalized for their wounds, Paul went to Kotzebue to be treated for injury to his arm while Charles was transported to Anchorage to be treated for a chest wound.

After shooting the two men, Smith left the area, floating down the river in the men’s inflatable boat, taking their equipment and supplies.
After they identified T.Smith as the Tuesday night shooter, troopers began an air and ground search of the area. Aircraft from the troopers as well as wildlife enforcement spotted the men’s stolen raft on Wednesday about thirty five miles upriver from Kiana.
Authorities began bringing in additional personnel into Kiana on Wednesday. Twelve troopers, including five from the Northern Special Emergency Reaction Team, were staged there. On Thursday, the officers were transported by boat and aircraft to a location approximately 16 miles upriver from the community. Positioned there between Smith and Kiana, they waited for the suspect to come to them. And come to them he did, at 2:45 pm on Thursday.
At that location, they made contact with Smith. He was apprehended without incident or injury.
A warrant had been issued for Smith charging him with two counts of Attempted Murder I, two counts of Theft II, one count of Robbery I, and Misconduct Involving Weapons III. Bail has been set at $500,000. Smith is due to be arraigned in Kotzebue today after being transported there.
The search for Smith began on September 7th after his mother was found deceased in Kiana. An intoxicated T.Smith fired a weapon toward first responders and people gathered there before fleeing the area. He had been drinking at the time.
Troopers have deemed the circumstances of 74-year-old Dolly Smith’s death suspicious, although they haven’t revealed any more details in that case.

45-year-old Teddy Smith was an ex-marine who had become an aspiring actor. He landed a role in the independent film, “On the Ice” that was released in 2011. In that award-winning film, Smith played the part of a protective father. That film was shot in Barrow by director Andrew Okpeaha MacLean.
Smith had also auditioned for a part in the film, “Big Miracle.”
He had posted on Facebook that he had “wrapped” filming of another movie, “Wildlike” on September 2nd. The producer of that movie, Schuyler Weiss, declined to comment on Smith’s role in that film.
Records show that Smith has had run-ins with the law before. He has pleaded “No-Contest” in 2000, 2003, and 2005 on assault charges and a restraining order was filed against him in 2010.
