The South Korean Defense Ministry announced that its cruise missile deployment is now complete. Although the exact range of the missile was not divulged, the Defense Ministry says that it can strike anywhere in North Korea, including the offices of the North Korean government.
The Hyunmoo cruise missile plans were announced initially in April of last year. Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said, “The cruise missile being unveiled today is a precision-guided weapon that can identify and strike the window of the office of North Korea’s leadership.”
The unveiling is seen as a move to show that the southern neighbor of North Korea isn’t as far behind technologically as once thought.
North Korea detonated their third nuclear device underground on Tuesday amid widespead critisicm by world leaders. This test, in conjunction with the North Korean’s demonstration of their missile capabilities poses a threat to the international community. North Korea has said that the two technologies, when complete, will give that country the capability to carry out a strike against the United States.
North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said of their Tuesday test, “This nuclear test was only the first response we took with maximum restraint, if the United States continues to come out with hostility and complicates the situation, we will be forced to take stronger, second and third responses in consecutive steps.”
Although the North Korean’s advancement in missile and nuclear technology has seen major breakthoughs, their ability to strike the U.S. is believed to still be many years away.
Some of the cruise missile deployment unveiled today are already positioned at the northern border of South Korea adjacent to North Korea.
At a news briefing in Seoul, the Defense Ministry announced that they are working as well to create a system to detect and wipe out any North Korean missiles.
