SOLDOTNA, Alaska-At a couple of minutes before 8 pm last night, the Soldotna Public Safety Communication Center received a report of a two vehicle crash at mile 87 of the Sterling Highway. The Alaska State Trooper Patrol-Soldotna, the Bureau of Highway Patrol and the Kenai Peninsula team responded to the call. Upon arrival, they confirmed the death of a driver of one of the vehicles.
The investigation found that Jesse Chumley, age 20 of Sterling was driving a 2007 Nissan Titan truck northbound on the Sterling when he crossed the centerline into the southbound lane. Jenna Herrmann, age 26 of Anchorage was traveling in that lane in a 1998 Dodge Stratus. Chumley struck Herrmann head-on.
Jenna Herrmann was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were also two other people in the Dodge Stratus. Tommy Brown II, age 29 fo Anchorage was in the right hand front passenger seat. Bilal Pitts, age 35 of Anchorage was in the left rear seat behind the driver. They were both transported to the Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna by CES. Bilal Pitts succumbed to his injuries as a result of the crash. Tommy Brown suffered only minor injuries and was later released.
Chumley was also admitted to the hospital with minor injuries and he was also later released.
The State Medical Examiner’s Office was notified and they requested the bodies for autopsy. Next of kin has been notified.
The road was closed for the investigation and remained closed until 2 am. The investigation as to the details of the crash is still on-going.
