Sterling Woman Jailed on Multiple Charges after Eluding Troopers

trooperarrestThe trooper dispatch reported on Monday that on Sunday afternoon, they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2oo2 Dodge Neon after it nearly collided with two other vehicles at mile 86 of the Sterling Highway, but the vehicle attempted to elude them.

When troopers attempted to pull the vehicle over at 1:54 pm, it sped away taking the troopers on a chase for 5-6 miles, the troopers report. But, then as the suspect vehicle entered the city of Sterling, it attempted to turn on to Cooper Street.

The vehicle’s driver, later identified as 24-year-old Holly N. Smith, stepped hard on the brakes for what the troopers estimate was 403-feet in an attempt to make the turn on the side street, but was unable to make the turn and ended up leaving the roadway and crashing into the tree-line.

After crashing, Smith fled on foot down Cooper Street, but, after a brief foot-chase, Smith was ultimately apprehended.

After being caught and identified, troopers found that Smith was driving with a suspended license and also determined that Smith was driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Smith suffered injuries in the accident, and was subsequently treated at Central Peninsula Hospital. After being medically cleared, she was placed under arrest on charges of Felony Eluding, Assault III x2, Reckless Driving, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, DUI and DWLS.

Smith was transported to Kenai where she was remanded to the Wildwood Pretrial Facility and held without bail.
