ANCHORAGE – Alaskans across the state must have their studded snow tires removed by May 1 in accordance with State law. Beginning Tuesday, law enforcement agencies can issue citations to drivers not in compliance. Studded snow tires increase wear and tear on Alaska’s paved roads, and are not needed outside of the winter months.
“As temperatures continue to rise and roads continue to clear, studded snow tires are no longer needed,” Commissioner Monegan said. “With a few more days before the statutory deadline, I encourage Alaskans to make arrangements to have their studded tires removed.”
Alaska State Troopers can issue a correctible $50 citation to drivers with studded tires beginning May 1. Citations for other borough and municipal law enforcement agencies vary.
