A report went in to the Alaska State Troopers on Sunday reporting a REDDI vehicle that had turned on to Funny River Road from Soldotna on Sunday at 12:42am.
Troopers responded to the call, and after locating the vehicle at mile 13 of Funny River Road, attempted to perform a traffic stop. The driver ignored troopers however and sped away, leading troopers on a chase outbound on the road.
As troopers and the suspect’s vehicle sped down the road at speeds between 45 and 65 MPH, they approached York Street at about mile 15 of Funny River Road, where the vehicle leading the chase turned on to York Street. The vehicle still ignored troopers and sped down the street.
But, a short time later, the vehicle lost control and drove of the right side of the road, and as it did so, it struck a power pole, snapping the pole off about two or three feet from the ground, leaving the pole to dangle from the power lines that remained attached.
The Homer Electric Association was called to the scene, as was Central Emergency Services after troopers found the driver of the vehicle unresponsive.
The unconscious 31-year-old driver from Wasilla was transported by CES to the Central Peninsula Hospital.
The trooper investigation into the crash is still underway, troopers believe that alcohol was a factor in the incident.
