Anchorage Police discovered a man pretending to be asleep at the Northern Lights Body ReNew Fitness Club on Sunday morning after responding to the scene to investigate a report of vandalism there.
Police arrived to find extensive damage to the club on Sunday morning. During their search of the building, they discovered 29-year-old Deepak Chaudhary pretending to be asleep between two exercise mats on the premises.
Chaudhary had damaged office equipment, torn a fountain from the wall and also damaged the entrance door at the club. Chaudhary had used a keycard to gain access to the building. But, while on his wrecking spree, had damaged the door mechanism and so, could not get back out through the door after his mayhem was complete.
Police say that apparently, Chaudhary thought he was trapped in the building. He had never checked the emergency exits.
Chaudhary was charged with Burglary I and Criminal Mischief II for the damage that is estimated to be $30,000.
