It has been reported by Syria Network for Human Rights Corespondents that today was a heavy day of shelling and rocket fire in border villages near the Turkish border.
Tanks and rocket launchers as well as four wheel drive vehicles with mounted machine guns, assisted by helicopters gathered at 3 am this morning in preparation of moving on Tal Rifaat City.
The tanks began shelling the city and neighboring villages at 7 am today. During the attack, helicopters began firing on government offices and the buildings surrounding them. By 8:30 am, fifty more tanks moved into the city as security vehicles and as many as 50 four wheel drives with machine guns waited at the entrance to the city.
Communications to the city have been shut down and as the shelling subsided, residents of the town began moving about trying to give medical aid and pull bodies from the rubble. As this happened, tanks began renewed shelling of the people that braved going out into the streets.
It is reported that at least 30 people have been killed in the attack.
Salama village, near the border of Turkey also came under heavy attack as well. Machine gun fire cut down residents trying to flee across the border to safety. Troops have been positioned to stop escape by any approaching the border to Turkey.
Machine gun fire and tank shelling has taken place in the towns of Anaden, Mari’e and Ming as well, there along with targetting houses, the tanks and machine guns have trained on civilian vehicles on the highways and streets.
Turkish officials have accused the Syrian army of firing upon refugees as they are crossing the border into Turkey. Some reports say that the refugees were on the Turkish side of the border when they were gunned down. The Turkish government is unsure if the shootings took place on Turkish soil. Two were killed and at least three wounded in that attack near Killis in Turkey.
The Syrian violence is also spilling over into neighboring Lebanon. It is reported that a camera man from a Lebanese television station was shot on the Lebanese side of the border as he was filming for news station Al-Jadeed. Another of the crew was wounded as well in the incident.
According to officials in Turkey and Syria, the cease fire scheduled for tomorrow is now “void.”
At least 9,000 people have been killed in the conflict thus far and over 24,000 refugees have fled across the border into Turkey to escape the violence in their country.
