According to trooper reports, during the noon hour yesterday, a three-vehicle accident occurred at mile 64.5 of the Glenn highway resulting in a fatality.
At 1:05 Alaska State Troopers and the Mat-Su Bureau of Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the accident.
Their investigation revealed that 34-year-old Michael Jenkins of Sutton was driving his red 1999 Mercury southbound on the Glenn Highway near mile 64, when he suddenly crossed the center-line into the northbound lane.
This resulted in his vehicle striking the left front of a 2003 GMC 2500 pickup operated by 41-year-old Lee Weikert of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, who was traveling northbound.
The resulting impact knocked Jenkins’ vehicle back into the southbound lane.
32-year-old Jeremiah Bass of Sutton was travelling behind the GMC truck in his white Chevy van when the collision occurred. In an effort to avoid the collision taking place in front of him, he veered into the southbound lane.

The driver of the GMC truck, Weikert, was taken to the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The Mercury, driven by Jenkins, and Weikert’s GMC were totaled.
The damage to the Chevy van was estimated at $5,000.
Troopers diagramed the scene, closing the highway for approximately 45 minutes.
It was reported that all involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Jenkin’s remains were transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office.
Next of kin have been notified.
