The Council of the largest Canadian city, Toronto, continued to debate the suspension and substitution of powers, duties and office operations of the mayor of that city today. The day has been fraught with heated words and traded barbs prior to the vote that passed resoundingly and stripped the city's mayor of a majority of his traditional powers.
44-year-old Mayor Rob Ford spoke last as the debate concluded before the vote and called the entire proceedings a “coup d etat” and vowed to fight the council at the next election. After the vote, Mayor Ford stalked from city hall refusing to answer any questions from the press.
Chaos broke out at the city council meeting earlier in the day when the Mayor walked around the chambers taking pictures of the crowd. In turn, some in the crowd began heckling the mayor amid chants of “Shame, Shame.”
The mayor’s brother, council member Doug Ford during that time came to the aid of his brother calling one of the spectators a “scumbag.” At one point, the mayor charged at the gallery of spectators, bowling down council member Pam McDConnell in the process, who almost tumbled to the ground. He later apologized to that council member.
Earlier in the morning, the mayor was heard in an interview on AM640 telling listeners that “They don’t like me saving money, that’s the bottom line.” It was during that morning show that the mayor first mentioned during the day that the council was conducting a coup d etat.
Council member Ford spoke to the press after adjournment and said it was “a sad day for Canada” and stated that the council broke the law and did not have the powers to do what was voted on resoundingly. He blamed the vote on the fact that the council didn’t “like Rob Ford and didn’t like that he was stopping the gravytrain.” He went on to say that his brother was “the most honest politician” in Canada.
The mayor’s public problems began after reports surfaced that the mayor has been smoking crack. Early during the first days of the news, Mayor Ford denied that he had, and only came clean after the public was made aware that a video existed showing him doing just that.
Allegations of drunk driving and prostitute solicitation surfaced soon after as did allegations of the mayor pressuring a member of his staff to engage in oral sex.
The vote today by Toronto’s city council has for all intents and purposes stripped Mayotr Ford of his powers and left him a mere figurehead at the head of the city.
But, according to Mayor Ford, this is not the end of his political career and has stated that some day he intends to run for Prime Minister of Canada.
