George Zimmerman, the former Neighborhood Watch member who spent months in the Nation's spotlight after he shot and killed unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, is back in the news again after deputies responded to a disturbance call in a Apopka, Florida neighborhood.
This latest arrest comes after authorities say that Zimmerman pointed a shotgun at his girtlfriend, broke a table then threw her out of the house, before barricading the door with furniture on Monday. Police were called at 12:30 pm Eastern time. When they arrived at the scene minutes later, Zimmerman was still there but not armed. They got a key for the door from the girlfriend, and forced their way into the barricaded home and placed Zimmerman under arrest. He did not resist arrest.
According to the report, Zimmerman’s girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, called police after the two got into an argument, at which time, she asked Zimmerman to pack his stuff and leave. As he was gathering his belongings, which included an AR-15 and a shotgun, she informed Zimmerman that she was calling the police. That was when the situation escalated. According to the report, Zimmerman then removed a shotgun from its case and pointed the firearm at Scheibe and asked her “if she really wanted to do that.” He then shattered the glass table with the butt of the shotgun.
This most recent accusation sounds similar to an incident that occured just this September when police were called because his estranged wife, Shellie Zimmerman, accused Zimmerman of threatening her with a gun while she was removing her belongings from the house they shared until she filed for divorce. During that incident, Shellie’s father took a punch to the nose and Zimmerman destroyed Shellie’s IPad. He was briefly handcuffed by police, but released soon after in that incident. That case was closed for lack of evidence last week.
Today, Zimmerman was charged with aggravated Assault, Battery, Felony Domestic Violence, and Criminal Mischief. He is currently being held without bail until arraignment at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility. Because of his noteriety, Zimmerman is being held in a single cell and checked hourly according to authorities.
