Alaska State Troopers were notified of a body in the ditch along Coal Street off of Healy Spur Road early Thursday morning by a co-worker.
The Alaska Bureau of Investigations and the Bureau of Highway Patrol responded to the scene at approximately 7 am this morning to investigate the incident.
The preliminary investigation found that a female, identified as 56-year-old Healy resident Gitte Stryhn, was riding her bicycle to work this morning when she was hit by an unknown vehicle. The unknown vehicle fled the scene after hitting Stryhn.
Information from her place of employment estimated that she would have been hit at around 5 am which is the time she usually bicycles to work.
Prior to biking to work this morning, Stryhn had updated her Facebook with a message saying, “Thank you friends for all your wishes for my day. I will enjoy it.” According to her Facebook account, Stryhn worked as a bus driver/tour guide at the Kantishna Roadhouse in the Denali Park during the summer and a bus driver for the school district in the winter months..
A male suspect has been detained for questioning in the incident.
Stryhn’s next of kin were notified of her death and ABI and BHP are continuing their investigation.
