A phone scam has surfaced in the state and has specifically affected residents in the Mat-Su area and the Alaska State Troopers are advising residents to beware of a caller asking to “borrow” money.
Troopers began investigating the phone scam that resulted in theft of cash at 5:45 pm on Tuesday.
Troopers say their investigation revealed that the scam has resulted in the theft of over $1,000 thus far. AST warn Alaskans to be wary of anyone calling or contacting them to “borrow” money with the promise of returning it quickly.
The investigation found that a male caller has been calling Mat-Su residents and borrowing money and having a “friend” pick up the funds and having that person leave a written agreement to pay the money back.
Troopers investigating this case are asking anyone with information on this scam to contact them at 907-245-2131 or to contact Crime Stoppers at 907-745-3333.
