KODIAK, Alaska — A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued two men from a capsized skiff 28 miles southwest of Sitka Saturday.

Coast Guard Sector Juneau command center watchstanders received a report from the men stating their 15-foot skiff was taking on water and directed the launch of the helicopter crew.

The watchstanders directed the launch of a Jayhawk helicopter crew. The rescue crew arrived on scene at 2:11 p.m. and while talking with the men via radio, the vessel capsized.

The rescue swimmer was deployed and helped hoist the two men. The men were flown to Sitka and safely transferred to awaiting emergency medical services at 3:04 p.m. in stable condition with no reported injuries.

“Because both men had on the proper safety gear when the vessel capsized they were able to stay afloat long enough for the swimmer to rescue them,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Chris Harkins, a watchstander with Sector Juneau. “The Coast Guard would like to remind all mariners to check the weather before getting underway.”

The weather at the time of the rescue was reported as winds of 45 mph with eight-foot seas.
