As 42-year-old Wasilla resident Jeffery Burwell was taking off from Wasilla on Monday to go on a bear hunting trip in King Salmon when he ran into trouble in his Super Cub PA-18.
During his attempted take-off, Burwell found he was not getting enough lift. As he was departing the airstrip, Burwell struck a light pole in the parking lot of Image Audio and nosed into the asphalt. After impact, the aircraft slid across the ATV trail there and into the Meridian Highway.
Burwell walked away from the crash uninjured. But, approximately 10 gallons of aviation gasoline was spilled during the crash. Alaska State Troopers responded to the scene at about 8:30 am. The Mat-Su Fire Department responded to the scene as well and subsequently cleaned up the spill.
Besides the light pole and the aircraft, no other damage was reported. The SAuper Cub sustained approximately $80,000 worth of damage and is considered a total loss.
