On Wednesday, the Alaska State Troopers released the statistics for the End of Summer Safety Enforcement operation.That operation ran from August 22nd and through the Labor Day weekend and was a cooperative effort between Anchorage, Palmer, Wasilla, and the Alaska State Troopers.
During the period of their End of Summer Safety Enforcement operation, law enforcement performed high-visibilty patrols along the Glenn Highway and surrounding areas as the troopers patrolled throughout the state.
During the operation, 190 Misdemeanor DUI arrests were made, with Anchorage making the most arrests at 95. Alaska State Troopers made 79, with Palmer and Wasilla making a combined 16 arrests. Five Felony DUI arrests were also made by combined enforcement during that time. At least 641 REDDI reports went into authorities that were ultimately determined to not be DUIs. with the vast majority, 543 going in to troopers.
490 damage only crashes were reported, 358 of them in the Anchorage area. There were also 89 injury crashes and three fatal crashes.
Throughout the state, there were 2,945 citations issued by the participating law enforcement departments, included were 986 speeding violations and 135 selt belt citations.
The campaign this year showed a marked increase compared to the campaign last year during the same period. Last year there were a total of 81 DUI arrests, 454 non-DUI REDDI reports, 1,539 citations issued and only 79 crashes investigated by Alaska State Troopers.
The campaign was coordinated through the Alaska Office of Highway Safety.
